2003 CD of the Month
The September 2003 IPCUG CDOM (CD of the Month) is focused on computer security with offerings from ZoneAlarm, Sygate (BlackIce) and SmartLine (DriveLock). Also included is latest browser offerings of Internet 6.1 SP1 and Netscape 7.1 for both Windows and Linux. Also on this months CD are Acrobat Reader downloads from Adobe with the latest version 6.0 for Windows98SE/2000/XP and the PocketPC (Windows 2002) as well the 2.0 ebook reader and Acrobat 5.05 for Windows95/98. Finally, we have included Service Packs 1 and 2 for Office XP along with udpates for Roxio 6 Platinum CD Authoring software.
Also on the CD is this auto-play browser based index to the CD. The hyperlinks in each section will run the installer for the program being described. When you click on the links, one of two things will occur. On installable programs you will be prompted to open or save the "downloaded" file. You select "run this program from its current location" and answer OK on any security questions in order for the installer to automatically run. On the link that point at Netscape 7.1 for Linux and provided your browser supports folder displays, you will see the contents of the folder.
Microsoft has been paying attention to the assaults on its operating system (more than usual) and now have a website at http://www.microsoft.com/security/ where they list access to Microsoft security patches and three steps to protecting your PC. The 3 steps they recommend is getting the latest patches and updates from Microsoft, followed by implementing some kind of firewall, and finally, an AntiVirus program. The only caution that I might offer on this (no warantee or guarantee implied, your mileage may vary) is for you to read the updates they want to apply to your computer. Some are may not needed or wanted.

When installing Acrobat Reader version 5 or later, you should always uninstall any previous versions, particularly 3.0, as removing it later will require that you reinstall the current version as well.
